UK's Civil Service recruits 166 criminals

SUMMARY

Over 160 individuals with criminal records have joined the Civil Service through a recruitment scheme aimed at providing second chances. Eligible candidates include those convicted of assault, theft, and shoplifting, while serious offenders like terrorists and sex offenders are excluded.

From 2021 to 2024, 374 applied for 293 positions, with 166 being hired. Roles range from administrative duties to IT support. The Cabinet Office seeks to reduce stigma around hiring ex-offenders and aims for 5% of new hires in executive roles to come from this program.

The initiative also welcomes military veterans, caretakers, and the homeless. All candidates must adhere to strict security vetting standards and demonstrate compliance with probation requirements.
