EU proposes defence projects to counter drones, protect eastern border

The European Commission proposed four flagship defense projects to prepare for potential threats by 2030, spurred by the Ukraine war and U.S. President Trump's calls for increased European security.

The initiatives include a counter-drone system, the European Drone Defence Initiative, and Eastern Flank Watch to strengthen the EU's eastern borders.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated, "Danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends."

The Commission aims for initial capacity in these projects by the end of next year. Other proposals include a European Air Shield and a European Space Shield. The 27 EU member leaders will decide on these projects' implementation.
