CIA working to arm Kurdish forces to spark uprising in Iran
The CIA is actively working to arm Kurdish forces inside Iran with the explicit goal of sparking a popular armed uprising against the Islamic Republic.
Multiple sources familiar with the plan confirm the Trump administration has held direct discussions with Iranian opposition groups and Kurdish leaders in Iraq about supplying military support. Iranian Kurdish armed groups maintain thousands of fighters along the Iraq-Iran border. Several have publicly urged Iranian military units to defect while preparing for imminent action.
On Tuesday President Trump spoke with Mustafa Hijri, president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. The group is one of those recently targeted by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps drone strikes. Kurdish forces are expected to launch a ground operation into western Iran in the coming days. The senior Kurdish official stated plainly, “We believe we have a big chance now,” adding that the militias anticipate direct U.S. and Israeli backing.
Trump also called Iraqi Kurdish leaders on Sunday to coordinate how Kurdish forces and the United States can operate together as the mission advances. Any arms flow would require Iraqi Kurdistan to serve as a transit and launch point. The explicit strategy is to pin down Iranian security forces so unarmed civilians in major cities can rise up without facing the massacres seen during January unrest.
Israeli strikes on Iranian military outposts along the Iraq border are intensifying to clear the path for this movement.
U.S. intelligence assessments note that Kurdish groups remain fractured with competing agendas and limited current influence. Yet the operation proceeds despite warnings that it could undermine Iraqi sovereignty and empower unaccountable militias.
The CIA declined comment.
