US House passes bill to fund federal govt. through September

SUMMARY

The House voted 217-213 to pass a bill funding federal agencies through September, aiming to prevent a government shutdown. Bipartisan support will be crucial in the Senate, requiring at least eight Democratic votes. Speaker Mike Johnson urged Democrats to consider the implications of refusing the bill, stating, “If congressional Democrats refuse to support this clean CR, they will be responsible for every troop who misses a paycheck.”

Jared Golden was the only Democrat to vote yes and Thomas Massie was the only Republican to vote no.

The bill cuts $13 billion from non-defense spending while increasing defense spending by $6 billion. Democrats expressed concerns over the bill's potential to give the Trump administration excessive control over spending, calling it a "blank check."

The upcoming decisions will influence the government's fiscal policies and may lead to significant cuts in areas like education and public safety in Washington, D.C.
