Caltech astrophysicist fatally shot on porch of his rural SoCal home

Carl Grillmair, a prominent Caltech astrophysicist, was shot and killed at his home in Llano, Antelope Valley. A suspect, identified as 29-year-old Freddy Snyder, has been charged with his murder. Authorities responded to a 911 call early in the morning and found Grillmair dead on his porch from a gunshot wound. Grillmair, 67, was known for his research in galactic astronomy, including significant work on the Milky Way and discovering water on distant planets. He had a passion for stargazing and operated a home observatory. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including a NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.
