India courts EU at Republic Day as trade deal nears

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day with EU leaders as guests of honor. The parade showcased military capabilities, including missiles and newly formed units.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the day’s theme, "150 Years of Vande Mataram."

EU leaders, including President Ursula von der Leyen, attended the celebrations and an upcoming summit. They are expected to announce progress on a landmark free trade deal, with von der Leyen stating, "A successful India makes the world more stable, prosperous and secure."

Trade between India and the EU reached €120 billion in 2024, a significant increase over the past decade. Global leaders like Xi Jinping and Emmanuel Macron congratulated India on its Republic Day.
