Pentagon nominee says review continuing on AUKUS nuclear submarine project
SUMMARY
John Noh, the nominee for the Pentagon's senior official for the Indo-Pacific, stated the U.S. is reviewing the AUKUS project to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. He emphasized the need to increase U.S. submarine production from 1.2 Virginia-class submarines to 2.33 per year to meet AUKUS commitments. Noh mentioned potential improvements for sustainability among AUKUS partners and noted that the review initiated in July is expected to conclude "by this fall." Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is optimistic about the initiative, set to discuss it with President Trump on Oct. 20.
