Orban vows to defy 'outrageous' EU migrant quotas

SUMMARY

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has rejected the new EU Migration Pact, which mandates member states to accept migrants or face a €20,000 fine for each refusal. He called the pact “an absurd and unjust attack” on Hungary, emphasizing that the country will not comply with the decision as long as he is in power.

The pact aims to support countries like Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and Spain under significant migration strain. Orban criticized the assumption that Hungary is unaffected by migration, noting tens of thousands attempting illegal crossings annually.

In June 2024, Hungary faces a €200 million fine for failing to adhere to EU asylum laws. Orban stated he would rather incur daily fines than accept migrants, prioritizing the safety of Hungarians.
