Italy will issue nearly 500,000 new work visas for non-EU nationals
Italy plans to issue nearly 500,000 work visas for non-EU nationals from 2026 to 2028 to address labor shortages.
Next year, 164,850 visas will be available, totaling 497,550 by 2028.
This initiative is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's strategy, following a previous decision to grant over 450,000 permits from 2023 to 2025.
Meloni has also strengthened measures against illegal immigration, expediting repatriations and limiting charity activities in migrant rescues.
With an ageing population and declining birthrate, attracting foreign workers has become crucial, as Italy's population fell by 37,000 in 2024.
The agricultural sector supports the plan, emphasizing the need for a stable workforce.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi stated, "The government will continue with determination to allow legal migration channels."
Research indicates Italy needs to welcome 10 million immigrants by 2050 to maintain population levels.
