Russian intelligence chief meets with Cuban president during visit to Havana
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel met with Serguéi Naryshkin, head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, in Havana to strengthen ties amid rising tensions with the U.S. During their meeting, Díaz-Canel praised the "excellent state" of bilateral relations and expressed gratitude for Russia's support against U.S. sanctions.
The visit coincided with significant anniversaries, reflecting the deep political connections between the two nations. Despite Russian promises of economic aid, everyday Cuban citizens continue to face shortages and blackouts.
The warming relations with Russia raise concerns in Washington, especially regarding military cooperation and intelligence activities on the island. On the day before the visit, as reported by the Associated Press, Trump ordered his top Cabinet officials to review U.S. policy toward Cuba, ordering them to reexamine active sanctions and come up with ways to toughen them within 30 days.
