Swiss court to hear landmark climate case against cement giant

A Swiss court will hear a climate case from residents of Pari Island, Indonesia, against cement company Holcim. The NGOs involved stated, "For the first time ever in Switzerland, a court has admitted climate litigation brought against a large corporation." The residents seek compensation and funding for protection measures due to rising sea levels.

They claim Holcim contributes significantly to CO2 emissions despite no longer owning plants in Indonesia. The plaintiffs request 3,600 Swiss francs each along with specific emission reduction targets from Holcim. One plaintiff expressed hope, saying, "This decision gives us the strength to continue our fight."
