Supreme Court lets Trump administration cut $783 million of research funding in anti-DEI push
The Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to cut $783 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, supporting the push to reduce federal diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The decision was split 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the dissenting justices. This ruling facilitates the cancellation of numerous grants despite ongoing lawsuits claiming the cuts will severely impact public health.
The lawsuit addresses only part of the estimated $12 billion of NIH research projects that have been cut. The Justice Department argues that funding decisions should not be subject to judicial review. Critics, including 16 Democratic state attorneys general, contend that these cuts threaten vital research and scientific progress.
