Michelin restaurant guide 'racist and Eurocentric'

SUMMARY

The Michelin Guide is accused of racism, Eurocentrism, and elitism by academics. Tulasi Srinivas, professor of anthropology at Emerson College, calls it “parochial” for ignoring Indian and African cuisines. Zeena Feldman, professor of digital culture at King’s College London, says it favors white, Eurocentric restaurants over diverse cuisines.

Critics highlight Michelin’s pay-to-play model with tourism boards. Defenders, including Michelin and former inspector Chris Watson, argue it celebrates global diversity with stars for Indian, Mexican, and Asian eateries, plus affordable dining options.
