Federal judge strikes down Biden-era transgender rule

SUMMARY

A federal judge overturned a Biden administration rule that expanded anti-discrimination measures in healthcare, stating the Department of Health and Human Services exceeded its authority. The ruling followed a lawsuit by 15 Republican-led states.

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti declared this a victory for states' rights to regulate healthcare decisions. The judge determined that Congress intended "sex" to mean biological sex when it passed Title IX. The 2024 rule, which was never implemented, had faced significant opposition.

The judge ruled that agencies cannot unilaterally modify long-established laws for political agendas.
