UK MPs vote in favour to decriminalise abortion
MPs have approved measures to decriminalise abortion in a significant law change, the first in over 50 years. The legislation allows women to terminate pregnancies without facing prosecution, regardless of the reason or stage of pregnancy. The move will allow women to end the life of their unborn child right up to birth without any legal consequence.
Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, who introduced the amendment, emphasized it would eliminate the threat of legal consequences for women. The amendment modifies the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act, previously criminalizing abortion.
While pro-choice advocates celebrated the decision, opponents raised concerns about potential consequences for unborn children. The amendment still criminalizes doctors who perform late-term abortions without justification.
