SAP splashes €20B on euro sovereign cloud push

SUMMARY

SAP plans to invest €20 billion in a new sovereign cloud infrastructure in Europe over the next decade. The company aims to provide a compliant alternative to U.S. cloud services, especially for the public sector. According to Thomas Saueressig, the initiative will "unlock access to the full spectrum of cloud innovations."

SAP offers three solutions for data sovereignty: SAP Cloud Infrastructure, Sovereign Cloud On-Site, and Delos Cloud in Germany. The strategy focuses on maintaining compliance with GDPR and providing security against potential U.S. data access issues.

CEO Christian Klein emphasizes innovation over competing with U.S. hyperscalers, stating that Europe's strength lies in software and AI, not duplicating large data infrastructures.
