The US fertility rate is at all-time lows

SUMMARY

The U.S. fertility rate has plummeted to all-time lows, dropping from a peak of 122.9 births per 1,000 women in 1957 to just 54.5 in 2023.

This decline is attributed to several factors including economic pressures, better access to contraception, changing social norms, and more women pursuing education and careers.

Notably, births are increasingly occurring among older age groups.

In 2005, women aged 25-29 had the highest birth rates, but by 2023, this shifted to women aged 30-34.

Fertility rates for women under 35 have declined, while rates for those 35 and older have risen.
