India launches nationwide HPV vaccination programme
SUMMARY
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nationwide HPV vaccination program for girls aged 14 on February 28, 2026, in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The program uses the Gardasil 4 vaccine, which protects against cancer-causing HPV types 16 and 18, along with types 6 and 11. It aims to vaccinate about 1.15 crore girls annually across India at no cost.
The campaign will run for three months, with vaccinations available daily at various government health facilities under trained supervision. Consent from parents or guardians is required. This initiative positions India among over 160 countries that have implemented HPV vaccinations, intended to significantly reduce cervical cancer risk.
