More and more individuals are 'debanked' for political reasons in Germany

SUMMARY

In Germany, political motivations are leading to the cancellation of bank accounts for both right-wing and left-wing individuals, the NZZ reports. Journalist Aya Velázquez recently celebrated the cancellation of her account with GLS Bank, suspecting it was politically motivated, but received no explanation.

Other media outlets, such as the Swiss station "Kontrafunk," have reported similar experiences. The Bundestag has not addressed these concerns, arguing that contract freedom is paramount.

The AfD party proposed a law to prohibit politically motivated account cancellations, while a ruling from Chemnitz determined that a Sparkasse must keep accounts open unless valid reasons are provided. The debate continues regarding the influence of banks in political matters.
