Megabill reading wraps up after nearly 16 hours
SUMMARY
Senate clerks completed a 16-hour reading of the GOP's 940-page megabill, starting late Saturday night and finishing Sunday afternoon. Senate Democrats aimed to spotlight unpopular aspects of the legislation by refusing to waive reading rules.
Under Senate rules, there will be 20 hours of debate, split between parties. Democrats plan to use their full 10 hours, while Republicans may only use a couple. This suggests the vote-a-rama will likely start early Monday, unless unanimously delayed.
The bill remains negotiable as GOP leaders seek to secure 51 votes in the Senate and enough support for passage in the House. Additionally, the parliamentarian is reviewing compliance with budget rules.
