Adult diapers take centre stage at a fashion show in Japan

SUMMARY

A fashion show focused on adult diapers took place at the Omutsu World Expo in Osaka, aiming to change the perception of nappies and address the needs of Japan’s ageing population. Featuring over 30 models in stylish, colorful designs, the event was dubbed the largest diaper fashion show in the world. Organizers highlighted the importance of creating future adult nappies that cater to diverse body types and conditions.

Director Kei Hirabayashi called the show a “social experiment” to see if diapers could become “cooler than skirts or trousers.”

With a declining birth rate and an increasing elderly population, Japan's diaper manufacturers are pivoting to products for older adults. Oji Nepia plans to halt infant diaper production entirely by March 2024.
