DOJ moving to wind down Trump 'criminal cases' before he takes office

SUMMARY

The Justice Department is evaluating how to end two federal criminal cases against President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office.

This aligns with the policy that sitting presidents can't be prosecuted. Recent discussions are a shift from Special Counsel Jack Smith's approach, who had been actively pursuing the cases.

Officials now believe trials in the January 6th and classified documents cases would be delayed by legal issues likely leading to appeals. With Trump becoming president again, there seems to be no justification for continuing these cases. Former federal prosecutor Chuck Rosenberg called the situation “sensible, inevitable and unfortunate.”
