US sonsiders relocating THAAD, Patriots to Middle East

SUMMARY

The U.S. military is actively considering relocating THAAD and Patriot air defense systems currently stationed in South Korea to the Middle East.

Severe depletion of interceptor stockpiles after massive expenditure against Iranian targets has forced Pentagon planners to weigh stripping key assets from the Korean Peninsula.

President Trump predicted the “Epic Fury” operation against Iran would last only 4-5 weeks. If airstrikes drag on, however, U.S. Forces Korea assets will be redirected.

Three of eight Patriot batteries from South Korea were already deployed to the Middle East last June ahead of prior strikes and later returned in October. The THAAD battery in Seongju and its intercept missiles are now under review for transfer.

The Financial Times reported up to 150 THAAD missiles were expended during last year’s 12-day war. MQ-9 Reaper drones permanently based at Gunsan Air Base could also be shifted.

South Korean experts warn the move would expose Seoul to North Korean ballistic missile threats. Shin Jong-woo stated the U.S. will likely draw on USFK combat power and assets if strikes prolong. Im Cheol-gyun added that diverting air defenses poses significant problems for South Korea.

South Korean officials confirmed consultations are ongoing with Washington to avoid compromising the joint defense posture. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back held talks with U.S. Under Secretary Elbridge Colby and reaffirmed alliance strength.

This consideration confirms extreme overstretch of America’s munitions reserves and the difficult trade-offs between competing theaters.
