Bulgarian government collapses after weeks of mass protests

SUMMARY

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned after widespread protests against his government. This marked the sixth confidence vote since his cabinet took power in January. Zhelyazkov stated, "We hear the voice of the citizens protesting against the government." A formal parliamentary vote on the resignation is required, with the coalition still holding a majority.

President Rumen Radev will now ask parties to form a new government. If this fails, a caretaker Cabinet will be appointed. Protests began over a controversial budget proposal but evolved into calls for accountability and transparency. Public skepticism about adopting the euro remains high amid concerns over inflation.
