US next-gen nuclear reactors to source advanced fuel from new domestic facilities

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is launching a pilot program to boost domestic production of advanced nuclear fuel. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign enriched uranium while encouraging private investment in the nuclear sector. The US currently lacks the infrastructure to meet future demands for nuclear fuel, which poses risks to energy supply.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasizes the need for secure supply chains. The DOE plans to fast-track the testing of new reactor designs, aiming for nuclear criticality in selected reactors by July 4, 2026. The program will assess proposals based on technological readiness and financial viability as efforts continue to develop new nuclear fuels.
