Australia announces gun buyback after Bondi attack

Australia has launched a gun buyback scheme following a deadly attack at Bondi Beach, the nation's worst mass shooting in decades. The attack, which was declared a terrorist incident, left 15 people dead, killed by a father-son duo motivated by extremist ideology.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the scheme will purchase unwanted and illegal firearms, with the government funding it jointly with states. The goal is to collect and destroy hundreds of thousands of firearms.

New controls will limit the number of firearms held by individuals and restrict open-ended licensing. A national firearms register will be expedited, enhancing regulation and monitoring of gun ownership.
