US diplomats will work with US troops in Israel to 'maintain Gaza ceasefire'

SUMMARY

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced an increase in diplomats working with U.S. military officers at a new center in Israel to monitor the cease-fire in Gaza. Speaking at the Civil-Military Coordination Center in Kiryat Gat, Rubio expressed "healthy optimism" about the cease-fire's progress, which follows a war that has led to significant civilian casualties.

The State Department named Steven Fagin as the lead civilian official at the center. With 200 U.S. troops assisting, the center aims to support stabilization efforts, although they won't be deployed in Gaza. Rubio noted that partner nations and NGOs would provide expertise, and he mentioned potential collaboration with the UN on peacekeeping.

The Trump administration also opposes Israeli annexation of the West Bank, warning that it could disrupt the peace process. Rubio emphasized the importance of maintaining the cease-fire, calling it a "top priority" for President Trump.
