Mauritius government in crisis over Chagos deal

SUMMARY

The Mauritian government is facing turmoil over "excessive concessions" to the UK regarding the Chagos Islands deal. Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger threatened to withdraw his party from the coalition, expressing concerns over strict conservation zones restricting Mauritian access to the US-UK military base at Diego Garcia.

The UK is expected to pay Mauritius £30bn over 99 years, but many Chagossians oppose handing the islands back to Mauritius. Bérenger accuses the government of making excessive concessions to Britain.

Despite a meeting easing tensions, fears of coalition collapse remain. Talks on security and environmental issues continue in London, with plans to finalize agreements by the end of November.
