Giant tuna the size of a motorcycle sold to 'Tuna King' for record $3.2 million at auction

SUMMARY

A bluefin tuna weighing 535 pounds was bought for a record 510.3 million yen (about $3.2 million) at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market by Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of Sushi Zanmai. This purchase broke his previous record set in 2019 for a 612-pound tuna costing roughly $2.1 million.

Kimura stated that he hoped to "lowball" the bidding, but the price rose quickly. Bluefin tuna are highly prized in Japan as symbols of status and prestige. The fish was caught off the coast of Oma, known for its exceptional seafood. Despite being classified as vulnerable due to overfishing, the bluefin population has been increasing thanks to conservation efforts.
