EU urged to build stockpiles to prepare for pandemic, natural disaster or invasion
The European Commission has proposed a strategy for the EU to stockpile essential supplies, including medicine and generators, to prepare for threats like pandemics, natural disasters, and military invasions.
Member states are advised to consider emergency supplies, such as water purification products and drones. This strategy is influenced by past crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the importance of reliable supply chains. By 2026, the EU plans to establish a center for critical raw materials and update lists of essential goods.
The EU also aims to enhance monitoring systems for early disease detection. Hadja Lahbib, the EU commissioner for crisis management, emphasized the need for preparedness against various risks.
