Salmonella cases in UK reach highest levels in a decade

SUMMARY

Salmonella cases in the UK have hit a decade-high, with a 17.1% increase from 2023, rising from 8,872 to 10,388 cases. Campylobacter infections also rose by the same percentage, reaching 70,352 cases. Both infections are commonly contracted through contaminated food, including meat, eggs, and unpasteurized dairy. Symptoms may include diarrhea, stomach pain, and fever, with vulnerable groups at higher risk of severe illness.

The UK Health Security Agency urges heightened precautions, particularly for children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Dr. Gauri Godbole emphasized the importance of handwashing and avoiding food handling while symptomatic.
