Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes found in Iceland for 1st time as temperatures in the region rise
SUMMARY
Mosquitoes have been discovered in Iceland for the first time due to rising temperatures associated with climate change. The first sighting was by Björn Hjaltason, who identified it as a female mosquito.
Entomologists confirmed the presence of the Culiseta annulata species, known for its cold tolerance. This species typically thrives in cooler climates and often lays eggs in artificial containers, facilitating its spread.
Iceland is warming four times faster than the rest of the northern hemisphere, making it more hospitable to these insects. Now, only Antarctica remains free of mosquitoes. As a result, there's an increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
