23andMe board of directors resign en masse, rebuking Anne Wojcicki

SUMMARY

All seven independent directors of 23andMe resigned, rejecting CEO Anne Wojcicki's attempts to take the company private. Resigning members included notable investors like Roelof Botha and Patrick Chung of Sequoia Capital and xFund.

After going public in 2021 via a SPAC formed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, with a valuation of $3.1 billion, 23andMe's shares have plummeted over 95%. Wojcicki's prior offer to take the company private was turned down for lacking a share price premium.

The board noted, "it is in the best interests of the company's shareholders that we resign" due to differing strategic directions. Wojcicki expressed that she is "surprised and disappointed" but maintains that a take-private deal is ideal for long-term success.

Founder Anne Wojcicki, sister of deceased YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, is the sole surviving board member.
