Italy signals it's ready to help Ukraine buy US weapons
Italy is ready to fund US weapons purchases for Ukraine to support its defense against Russia, according to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. This was discussed at a recent NATO meeting, where more than half of the alliance's members pledged financial support for Ukraine's military needs.
Kyiv aims to enhance its capabilities, particularly for critical equipment like Patriot systems, through the PURL program. Italy's shift from initial opposition to participation was influenced by concerns over potential marginalization. Funding for Ukraine has become urgent, especially as military aid has slowed since the US announced it would stop covering weapon costs.
Italy has contributed to various military aid packages, including air defense systems. Despite fiscal challenges, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remains supportive of Ukraine.
