Slovakia to consider reciprocal measures if Ukraine stops Russian gas transit

SUMMARY

Slovakia may take reciprocal actions against Ukraine if it stops the transit of Russian gas, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico. He stated that Slovakia would consider halting electricity supplies to Ukraine and other measures after January 1. Ukraine plans to cease allowing Russian gas shipments across its territory.

Fico highlighted that alternative routes for gas would significantly increase costs, possibly costing Slovakia 500 million euros in transit fees. He also warned that the EU might face costs of up to 120 billion euros in 2025-2026 due to higher energy prices. Slovakia continues to supply humanitarian aid and electricity to Ukraine despite changing its foreign policy dynamics.
