World on the brink of new nuclear arms race
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) warns that global instability is increasing the likelihood of nuclear weapon use. The SIPRI Yearbook highlights a new arms race among nine nuclear-armed states, despite a decline in total nuclear warheads due to US and Russian disarmament.
However, new warheads are being added, potentially outpacing reductions. Nations like China, India, and North Korea are modernizing and expanding their arsenals, with China developing hundreds of new launch silos. Conventional military conflicts and rising expenditures are also contributing to nuclear proliferation concerns.
SIPRI emphasizes that launching a nuclear war would lead to devastation, expressing that “it still makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to launch a nuclear war under any circumstances.”
