Hackers leak 86 million AT&T records with decrypted SSNs

SUMMARY

Hackers have leaked data on 88 million AT&T customers, including decrypted Social Security Numbers (SSNs). The breach reportedly stems from a compromised Snowflake cloud environment, exploited by the ShinyHunters group in April 2024. Initial data was posted on a Russian cybercrime forum in May, with complications in distinguishing this leak from prior incidents.

The data includes: Full names, Date of birth, Phone numbers, Email addresses, Physical addresses and 44 Million Social Security Numbers (SSN) (43,989,219 in total)

AT&T experienced significant breaches previously, including a ransom payment in Bitcoin to delete stolen data. This latest leak presents high risks for identity theft due to the decrypted SSNs and personal information it contains. AT&T has yet to confirm the relationship between this leak and prior incidents. Lawmakers have demanded accountability from AT&T regarding data security following these breaches.
