Trump preparing to reopen Alaska wildlife refuge for oil drilling

SUMMARY

The Trump administration plans to allow oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) coastal plain, reversing protections established for over 40 years. This move aligns with President Trump's pledge during his first term to promote drilling in the 1.56 million-acre area in Alaska. The decision is expected from the Interior Department soon, though it may be delayed due to the government shutdown.

Environmental groups are likely to challenge this decision legally. Kristen Miller from the Alaska Wilderness League described the refuge as the “crown jewel of our public lands system,” warning that drilling could harm vital ecosystems.

Meanwhile, some local communities support the development for economic reasons. As the administration pushes for increased fossil fuel production, leasing plans are already underway for the coastal plain.
