AI traffic cop catches thousands of drivers texting behind the wheel

SUMMARY

UK trials of an AI 'traffic cop' have successfully detected thousands of drivers texting while driving.

The technology, developed by Acusensus, an Australian AI company, uses cameras to monitor vehicles and then AI to scan the inside of vehicles as they drive past. In just five weeks in Manchester, over 3,000 offenses were recorded. Additionally, incidents of seatbelt violations decreased by 83%.

Adrian Leisk from Devon & Cornwall Police reported an 80% drop in daily texting violations, indicating effective enforcement. Geoff Collins from Acusensus noted a growing interest in expanding the trials to more regions. This initiative aims to enhance road safety by reducing distractions that contribute to accidents.
