Morocco's protests escalate after deadly clash with police
SUMMARY
Morocco is experiencing its worst unrest since the Arab Spring, with youth-led protests igniting over poor public services and exorbitant spending for the upcoming 2030 football World Cup.
Two people died in Lqliaa when authorities opened fire on demonstrators, claiming self-defense to protect their weapons. Over 1,000 individuals have been detained since protests began.
Unlike previous uprisings, protesters currently demand an end to corruption and better services. Organizing under the leaderless group GenZ212, they chant "health care first, we don’t want the World Cup."
Amid rising tensions, Morocco's spending on World Cup infrastructure has sparked significant anger among its 38 million citizens, especially with high youth unemployment.
