Trump admin turning to private firms in cyber offensive

SUMMARY

The Trump administration plans to involve private businesses in offensive cyberattacks against foreign adversaries. A new national cyber strategy will be announced, allowing private firms to help combat state-sponsored hackers and ransomware attacks.

Currently, there is no legal framework for private companies to carry out such operations, which could expose them to foreign threats. The strategy may also include an executive order to clarify firms' roles and provide legal protections.

Trump's tax law includes a provision for a $1 billion boost to offensive cyber operations. Experts note that while cybersecurity firms could adapt their defensive skills, the transition to offensive work carries financial and legal risks.
