'40,000 troops'
NATO to ask Berlin for seven more brigades under new targets
SUMMARY
NATO plans to request Germany to provide seven additional brigades, totaling around 40,000 troops, as part of new military targets to enhance defense against Russia. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO is significantly increasing its military readiness, raising the total brigade target to 120-130, a 50% increase from the current 80.
Germany initially committed to supplying 10 brigades by 2030 but currently has only eight operational. The country faces challenges in meeting these demands due to a shortfall of 20,000 troops in its military. NATO describes its new targets as "ambitious" but hasn't specified details.
