Trump to reverse most National Weather Service DOGE cuts

Trump’s administration, after slashing 600 National Weather Service (NWS) jobs via DOGE in February 2025, now authorizes rehiring 450 meteorologists, hydrologists, and radar technicians. The cuts, criticized after Texas floods killed over 130, degraded forecasts.

“Hundreds of unfilled positions have caused NWS offices across the country to cancel weather balloon launches,” said Sorensen. Five former NWS directors warned of “needless loss of life” due to shortages. NOAA’s hiring process may take months, with only nine open positions currently listed.
