Major incident declared in Shropshire as huge sinkhole swallows canal
SUMMARY
A major incident was declared in Shropshire following a significant sinkhole opening beneath a canal.
At least ten people were rescued from narrowboats after the 50-meter-wide crater formed in Whitchurch around 4:22 AM. Firefighters dealt with unstable ground and swiftly moving water while rescuing occupants.
Two narrowboats fell into the sinkhole, and water rapidly drained from the canal, flooding a nearby field. Emergency services have urged residents to avoid the area.
Local authorities confirmed no injuries have been reported, and efforts continue to manage the situation and assist evacuated residents.
Councillor Andy Hall emphasized the focus on caring for those affected during this festive season.
