Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle resigns

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned amid criticism for failing to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally on July 13.

The attack resulted in one death and two injuries, prompting calls for her resignation from both parties. Cheatle took full responsibility, stating, "The Secret Service's solemn mission is to protect our nation's leaders...on July 13th, we fell short."

Ron Rowe, the agency's deputy director, will serve as acting director. President Biden expressed gratitude for Cheatle's service and noted that an independent review into the incident will continue.
