New Royal Navy autonomous helicopter makes history with first flight
The UK's first fully autonomous full-size helicopter, Proteus, has successfully completed its maiden flight at Predannack airfield in Cornwall. Built by Leonardo for the Royal Navy, Proteus is designed to operate alongside crewed aircraft in future hybrid air operations, particularly in anti-submarine missions.
The flight follows extensive ground trials at Leonardo’s Yeovil site and is a key milestone in the UK’s Strategic Defence Review to establish a "New Hybrid Navy."
Proteus is notable for its size and autonomy, equipped with sensors and advanced software to operate independently. It can carry over one ton of equipment for missions in challenging weather.
Minister Luke Pollard hailed the flight as a significant achievement for British innovation. The helicopter's role will enhance maritime aviation capabilities and support national defense efforts against evolving threats.
