Nasdaq seeks to extend trading hours, as Wall Street gears up for 24/7 move

SUMMARY

Nasdaq plans to submit paperwork to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for round-the-clock stock trading, aiming to meet rising global demand for U.S. equities. Currently, Nasdaq offers 16 hours of trading during the week. The proposed expansion would allow trading from Sunday at 9 p.m. to Friday at 8 p.m. The day session will include pre-market and regular trading, while the night session will run until 4 a.m.

Despite the demand, major banks express caution, citing concerns over liquidity and volatility. Nasdaq believes that enabling 24/7 trading will improve access for global investors. Chuck Mack stated, “If you think of those investors around the world, they want to access this huge market on their own terms and they want to do it in their own time zones.”
