British troops sent to Israel to monitor Gaza ceasefire per US request

SUMMARY

Britain has deployed a senior commander and a small number of troops to Israel to support a fragile Gaza ceasefire at the request of the U.S. Defence Secretary John Healey stated this move aims to leverage British "specialist experience and skills" for long-term peace.

The British officer will serve as deputy to a U.S. commander in a civil-military coordination center, which also includes troops from several countries.

Healey emphasized, "We can contribute to the monitoring of the ceasefire."

The British team, alongside 200 U.S. troops, will not operate in Gaza. The situation is tense, with both Israel and Hamas accusing each other of violations.
