More than 1,000 migrants arrive in small boats in one day

Over 1,000 migrants crossed the Channel to the UK in one day, despite a new deportation deal with France. On Friday, 1,072 people made the journey in 13 boats. This year, 32,103 migrants have arrived, setting a record. The Home Office reported the first deportation under the deal occurred the previous day.

Ministers aimed for the deal to deter crossings, but Friday's numbers indicated little impact. The agreement allows the UK to send back migrants who arrive illegally, while admitting others via safe routes.The first flights for asylum seekers under the deal are expected next week.
