RAF air crew win battle for vegan uniforms

SUMMARY

RAF air crews can now wear vegan uniforms following a successful campaign. Personnel identifying as ethical vegans are entitled to eco-friendly items like boots and berets. This change comes from the Ministry of Defence’s Vegan and Vegetarian Network, which aims to eliminate animal products from uniforms.

Under the new regulations, vegans must inform their command about their preferences, initiating a process to procure appropriate items at public expense. Critics, including veterans and former ministers, question the appropriateness of such changes during tense global situations.

Retired Rear Admiral Philip Mathias, a former nuclear submarine captain said:

“Given that we could be on the brink of war with Russia, it seems strange that the RAF is worrying about the importance of introducing vegan boots, If we get attacked by the Russians tomorrow, are we going to be worried about getting vegan boots?"

The RAF stated it is committed to providing suitable uniforms that align with personnel's morals and values.
